Two of the main dialects of Arabic are Modern Standard Arabic and Colloquial Arabic. Modern Standard Arabic is used in more formal situations and is the official language of twenty-two Arab countries. Colloquial Arabic is used in day-to-day conversations and varies by region. Arab Academy offers online Arabic courses in Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic. Here are some of the first Arabic language words that you can learn during an online course:
The Basics
To start learning Arabic, you must first know the Arabic alphabet. The alphabet has twenty-eight script letters. The Arabic language is also written from right to left, and it does not use vowels in the written form. Letters have isolated, initial, medial, and final forms that impact the flow and fluidity of the words.
Arab Academy offers Modern Standard Arabic 100 and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic 100 for beginners without prior knowledge of Arabic. These courses introduce students to the Arabic sound system and script and teach the difference between the Arabic and Latin alphabets. At the end of the course, you will be able to distinguish between Arabic letters. You’ll also be able to correctly recognize and write the letters for the beginning, middle, and end of words. In addition to teaching you the alphabet, these courses instruct you how to read simple three-letter words and help you learn simple vocabulary words connected to your daily life.
Common Phrases
If you are a beginner in an online Arabic course, you can also expect to learn common phrases to greet people and exchange basic information. These include:
- Greetings and goodbyes
- “Please” and “thank you”
- Saying your name
- Asking where things are
Learning the basic phrases first helps you form the foundation for understanding more complicated vocabulary and phrases. Our Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic 101 courses are geared toward teaching students the expressions they need to initiate social interactions. They also help students engage in everyday situations with native speakers. For example, students can learn how to order food, get directions, and discuss prices. As you progress, you will also learn words for talking about yourself and others, including descriptions, jobs, education, and hobbies.
We use these introductory courses to teach students about Arab culture. This means we learn subjects that relate to the self, family, socializing, and social interactions. The Egypt Colloquial Arabic course teaches students the cultural basics for interacting in the Arab world.
